Apple has reportedly joined forces with Elon Musk’s SpaceX and U.S. telecom giant T-Mobile to bring Starlink satellite connectivity to iPhones. This groundbreaking partnership aims to ensure uninterrupted communication, even in the most remote locations, by integrating Starlink’s powerful satellite network with Apple’s cutting-edge technology.
Apple revolutionized mobile communication by introducing satellite connectivity with the iPhone 14 in 2022, enabling users to reach emergency services even in areas without traditional cellular coverage. With iOS 18, this feature became even more powerful, allowing users to send messages to friends and family via satellite.
Initially, Apple collaborated with Globalstar to bring this cutting-edge technology to iPhone users. However, according to Bloomberg, Apple has now been secretly working alongside SpaceX and T-Mobile to integrate Starlink satellite connectivity into iPhones.
T-Mobile and SpaceX first announced their partnership in 2022, initially stating that only select Samsung devices would support Starlink connectivity. In December, T-Mobile opened beta registrations for the program.
However, Bloomberg reports that a limited number of iPhones have now begun testing an early version of Starlink connectivity, coinciding with the launch of iOS 18.3. Interestingly, Apple made no mention of this in the update’s official release notes.
A message sent to select participants confirmed their inclusion in the T-Mobile Starlink beta, stating: “You can now stay connected with texting via satellite from virtually anywhere.” To access this groundbreaking feature, users were instructed to update their devices to iOS 18.3. Additionally, T-Mobile updated its support website to confirm that its Starlink-powered satellite service now extends to iPhones.
At present, Starlink connectivity on T-Mobile supports only texting, but both companies have ambitious plans to enhance the service with data and voice capabilities in the near future. This marks a major leap forward in ensuring seamless connectivity, no matter where you are in the world.
